Everyday Thought: Fear & Greed
We are living in a time like no other. Uncertainty is at an all time high. Economies are on he brink of collapse. The best and brightest minds humanity has to offer are perplexed and seemingly unable to bring resolution to current crisis.
It is at times like these when fear and greed are rampant. These sisters will cause people to make hasty and unwise decisions. It is desperation that will either turn people to God or make them do things they would otherwise never do. Remember this simple test: if you wouldn't do it when all is going well, you probably shouldn't do it when its not. And the contrary is true as well. Our integrity is tested when circumstances suddenly change.
When things get tight, fear and greed make us suspicious of others. People who normally would be our trusted friends, in crisis, can become victims of our blame or fodder for mistrust. Again, the opposite can be true as well. The temptation to relieve the pressure makes us susceptible to swindlers and opportunists. We'll mistakenly trust a smooth presentation promising a great reward from someone we don't even know.
With all of this said, this is a time of tremendous opportunity. Never before have people not trapped by fear or greed had such fertile soil for seed sowing. Businesses and properties are being sold for pennies on the dollar if not given away because of panic. Gifted and experienced people are ready to work for much less than just a year ago to enjoy a little security. Our ability to remain generous in such uncertainty will be the tool for kingdom advancement in the coming year. What a time to be alive!
In Genesis 9:2 fear is first mentioned. God promised Noah that the fear of him would be upon all of his surroundings. In other words, fear was not meant to be upon man, but because of him. Sin has perverted God's order and now man has become afraid of his circumstances. Those no longer under the law of sin can enjoy the freedom of seeing clearly in the midst of great uncertainty. These are the ones who will not only come out ahead but will be responsible for changing the current conditions under which we live.
Strive to be free from fear and greed. Remember to spend more time listening to the One who sits in heaven than those who reside on earth. His perspective will override your reaction to the state of things and turn you into an agent of positive change. Let what He shows you bring hope and preparation to many. The world is in direct need of faith.
